How to Commission a Personalised Painting

I believe there is something truly special about owning a piece of custom artwork created just for you, one that tells your story in watercolour washes and inky thoughtful details. Whether you’re marking a milestone, capturing a memory, or simply want something beautiful on your wall, commissioning a personalised painting is easier (and more joyful) than you might think.

Here’s how the magic happens.

1. Start with an idea, not a finished vision

You don’t need to arrive with a perfectly formed brief. A few sentences, a memory, a list of favourite things, or a colour palette you love is more than enough. I’ll help shape those ideas into a clear concept for your custom illustration, suggesting ways to weave in personality and meaning.

2. Choose your subject

A personalised painting can be inspired by almost anything whether that’s a beloved place, a memory or a treasured object.

Maybe a particular sea view means the world, or a family home, or a wedding venue. Maybe it’s the cosy corner of a favourite café, or the messy colour of a craft table. These little worlds often make the most enchanting subjects.

3. Collaborate on the details

Once we’ve settled on the idea, I’ll create a pencil sketch so you can see the composition. This is your chance to share feedback before the paintbrush comes out. Two rounds of feedback are always included, but most clients only need one as by this stage, we’re usually in sync.

“I can't thank you enough Kat, firstly for creating something that is totally bespoke to them, capturing perfectly the essence of the happy couple (on their wedding day) with your stunning creation - a very special keepsake for a very special day. On opening the card on arrival, it reduced me to (happy) tears seeing the piece in real life – the loveliest way to commemorate such a special day.

Thank you and we will be 100% ordering from you in the future".

4. Watch your custom artwork come to life

Your personalised painting is hand-drawn in ink and watercolour on smooth 300gsm paper. I start with gentle washes of colour, building layer by layer before adding fine lines and those details that will make your person smile when they notice them.

You’ll see glimpses of your piece as it progresses, so you can enjoy the process almost as much as the finished painting.

5. Approve, receive and display

Once approved, your custom artwork is carefully packaged and sent by tracked post, ready to frame, gift or treasure. Some clients choose to add professional printing, stationery, or digital copies so they can enjoy their artwork in multiple ways.

My top tips for commissioning a personalised painting

  • Share your inspiration with me, whether that’s photos, screenshots, Pinterest boards, basically anything that helps capture your story.

  • Be open to suggestions. A professional illustrator like me (hello! Link to About page) will know how to balance composition, colour and storytelling.

  • Think about scale. A5 is perfect for gifts whilst A4 and larger make statement pieces.

  • Consider timing. When booking with me, please allow at least 3–4 weeks for a fully bespoke illustration (this can be longer at busy times).

The Joy of Owning Custom Artwork

A personalised painting is a one-of-a-kind keepsake infused with imagination and care. Every brushstroke reflects a story that couldn’t belong to anyone else.

If you’re ready to bring your idea to life, I’d love to create a piece of custom artwork that feels uniquely yours.

"I asked Kat to create an illustration of a reading as a gift after finding her online. I wasn’t sure what I wanted but she took my inspiration and turned it into something absolutely perfect, she is just so talented. I couldn't be happier with the finished picture and it makes for a completely personal and unique gift. Thanks so much Kat!"
